Redundant entry
Silktide finds forms on your pages and asks you to confirm they never make visitors type the same information twice. Anything asked for earlier in a process should be filled in automatically, or offered for the visitor to select, rather than requested again.
Why this matters
Re-typing information is more than an annoyance. People with memory or cognitive disabilities may not recall what they entered two steps ago, and people with motor disabilities pay for every extra keystroke. A checkout that asks for the delivery address again on the billing page can be the step where these visitors give up.
Carrying information forward - or offering a "same as delivery address" tick box - removes the burden for everyone.
How to fix it
This check asks you to verify each form manually, because redundant requests often only appear as you progress through a process:
- Complete each form from start to finish, exploring any branches that show different fields depending on earlier answers.
- Wherever the same information is requested twice, either fill it in automatically, or let the visitor select it (for example "same as delivery address") instead of re-typing it.
Exceptions are allowed when re-entering the information is essential (such as confirming a new password), when it is needed for security, or when the earlier value is no longer valid.
If a flagged form never requests anything twice, the finding.
How Silktide tests this
- Find every form on each page, skipping the hidden forms that known tracking and translation scripts add for their own use.
- Skip forms with one or no visible fields, which cannot meaningfully request anything twice, and any elements you have excluded from checking.
- Flag each remaining form for your review. Silktide cannot fill in and submit forms during a scan, so whether a process repeats a question is a judgement for a human.
