Sign language for prerecorded media

Silktide finds the video players on your pages so you can confirm that prerecorded videos with dialogue provide a sign language interpretation. Whether an interpreter appears in or alongside the video is something only a person can verify.

Why this matters

For many people who are deaf, sign language is their first language, and written are a second language read at speed. A sign language interpretation - an interpreter visible in the video or in a companion version of it - conveys tone, emphasis, and nuance that captions flatten, and makes the content genuinely native for those viewers.

This requirement comes from success criterion 1.2.6, which applies at - the strictest conformance level, beyond what most organizations target.

How to fix it

Findings from this check are prompts to verify, not confirmed failures. For each video reported:

  1. Check whether it contains spoken content. A video with no dialogue or meaningful audio passes; the finding.
  2. For videos with dialogue, provide an interpretation: record an interpreter into the video (typically overlaid in a corner), or publish an interpreted version and link it clearly from the original.
  3. Use interpreters for the sign language of your audience - sign languages differ by country, and one interpretation does not cover all viewers.

How Silktide tests this

  1. Find the video players in each page's own , skipping any elements you have excluded from checking.
  2. Ignore videos that are permanently muted, which cannot contain spoken content.
  3. Also report links that go directly to videos on known external video platforms.
  4. Report each remaining player for you to confirm a sign language interpretation is provided - Silktide cannot watch the video or recognize an interpreter in it.

Troubleshooting

The video already includes an interpreter

Silktide cannot see inside the video, so interpreted videos are still listed. Verify the interpretation and approve the finding.
