Presence with a keyboard or screen reader

This page explains how to use Presence's heatmaps, brand map, and answers with a keyboard or a . For features that work on every screen, such as shortcuts, themes, zoom, and how to read a chart, see Accessibility features.

Read a heatmap

The heatmaps on Visibility, Assistants, Search engines, Traits, and Compare are tables, so your screen reader's table commands work in them.

  • Every cell shows its number, so the shading is never the only way to read it. A screen reader reads each cell as a full sentence, such as which brand was named in how many of the responses about a topic.
  • A cell that was not measured is marked n/a. A brand that was measured but never appeared shows 0%.
  • Cells that open more detail are links. Buttons in the headings sort the table.

When the heatmap has little room, such as on a phone or when you zoom in, it turns into a compact grid that is a single stop in the Tab order. Use the arrow keys to move between cells, and Enter or Space to open a panel with the cell's full reading.

Use the brand map

The brand map draws the names that assistants mention together. The View tabs switch between Map, Explore, and Table.

  • Table lists the same names and ties as text, with the same actions as the map. It is the easiest way to read the brand map with a screen reader.
  • On the map, each name is a button read with how many responses offered it. Zoom in, Zoom out, and Fit the whole workspace on screen change what you see, and your screen reader announces the new zoom level.

Read an assistant's answer

On an answer:

  • Each brand named in the answer is a button that opens its menu.
  • Highlighted and Original switch between the answer with its highlights and the answer as the assistant wrote it.
  • Citation buttons open the list of pages the assistant cited, each named after the page and its website.
  • How the answer portrays each brand is shown with an icon that has a text name, as well as its color.

Charts, news, and progress

  • Charts open as a table of their values with Expand, and many also have a ranked table beside them. Rises and falls are shown with an arrow as well as color.
  • On News, each story's headline is its link, and its relevance is read as a number, such as "Relevance 3 of 5".
  • While Presence is measuring, the sidebar says how many background jobs are running, and your screen reader announces changes without moving your focus.
Known issues we are working on

We fix accessibility issues as part of our regular releases. These are the open ones you are most likely to notice, with a way around them where there is one.

  • Chart details and selection. The details that appear when you point at a chart, and selecting a point on the Gaps chart, need a mouse or trackpad. Use Expand for the chart's table; the table beside the Gaps chart has the same links.
  • Praise and criticism in answers. Highlighted praise and criticism in an answer are shown by color, and a screen reader does not say which a phrase is.
  • Direction of a change. Where a rise or fall is shown as an arrow beside an amount, a screen reader may read only the amount.
  • Sorted columns. In Presence's sortable tables, a screen reader is not told which column is sorted.
  • Compact heatmaps with many columns. With more than 7 columns, most cells in a compact heatmap show their value by color. Press Enter on a cell to read its number.

If one of these gets in your way, tell us.
