3rd-party facades

Silktide loads your pages in a real browser and looks for embedded third-party services, such as video players and chat widgets, that load in full even though a visitor may never use them. These can be replaced with a facade, a lightweight placeholder that loads the real service only when someone interacts with it.

Why this matters

Embeds are among the heaviest things a page can carry. A single embedded video player or chat widget can download more code than the rest of your page combined, and it does so for every visitor - including the majority who never press play or open the chat. That cost lands during page load, exactly when speed matters most.

A facade flips the deal: visitors see what looks like the embed (a thumbnail with a play button, a chat bubble), and the real service loads only on click. Most visitors never pay the cost at all.

How to fix it

  1. For each reported embed, check whether a facade exists. Popular video players and chat widgets have well-maintained open-source facades, and searching the service's name plus "facade" usually finds one.
  2. Replace the embed code with the facade. The visible result is nearly identical; the difference is that the heavy code loads on interaction.
  3. Where no ready-made facade exists, apply the same idea: show a static preview image, and inject the real embed on click via .

How Silktide tests this

  1. Load the page in a real browser and identify third-party embeds that are known to have a facade alternative, using a public catalogue of such services.
  2. Measure what each embed costs: the time its code occupies the browser's and how long it blocks the page from responding.
  3. Report each embed with its files and timings so you can judge whether a facade is worthwhile.

Troubleshooting

Visitors interact with the embed immediately

A facade adds a short delay when the visitor first interacts, while the real service loads. For an embed that most visitors use right away, that trade-off may not be worth it - this check flags candidates, and you decide. Facades can also preload on more subtle signals, such as the pointer hovering nearby, which hides most of the delay.
