Headings

Silktide collects the headings from each page so you can review them in one place and confirm they describe the content beneath them. No automated test can judge whether a heading is genuinely descriptive, so this one is for human eyes.

Headings are the <h1> to <h6> elements in a page's . Read together, they should work as an outline of the page.

Why this matters

Headings are how people skim. Most visitors read headings first and only dive into sections that look relevant, and people using commonly jump from heading to heading rather than reading linearly. Vague headings ("Overview", "More information") force everyone to read the body text to find out what a section contains.

Search engines also weigh heading text when judging what a page is about, so descriptive headings with natural keywords help your pages rank for the right queries.

How to fix it

Review the headings Silktide lists for each page and check that:

  1. Each heading describes the content that follows it - a reader should be able to predict the section from the heading alone.
  2. The headings together form a sensible outline of the page, without duplicates or filler.
  3. Key topics use the words your audience would search for, where that reads naturally.

Rewrite any heading that fails these tests in your . If an element is marked up as a heading but is really decoration (a slogan, a pull quote), change it to styled text instead.

How Silktide tests this

  1. Find every heading (<h1> through <h6>) on each page, skipping elements you have excluded from checking.
  2. List them for review; Silktide does not score the wording itself.

Structural heading problems are tested automatically by separate checks - see More than one Heading 1 and Skipped H2 headings.
