Drag and drop alternative
Where a page lets visitors drag something from one place to another, the same action should also be possible without dragging, for example with buttons or menu options. This check asks you to review each page for dragging features, because dragging cannot be reliably detected automatically.
Why this matters
Dragging requires holding a button or keeping a finger pressed while moving precisely to a destination. That is difficult or impossible for people with tremors or limited strength, and for people who operate a computer through speech control, a head pointer, or an eye tracker, which produce simple clicks rather than sustained press-and-move gestures. If dragging is the only way to reorder a list, move a file, or set a slider, these visitors cannot complete the task.
This is success criterion 2.5.7 (Dragging Movements), a requirement in WCAG 2.2, so it is part of the conformance target most organisations aim for.
How to fix it
This is a manual review. On each page:
- Look for anything a visitor moves by dragging: sortable lists, kanban cards, file upload zones, sliders, and map panning are common examples.
- Confirm each one can be operated with single taps or clicks. For example, a card could offer "Move to..." buttons or a menu, a file upload zone should also accept a click that opens a file picker, a slider could accept a typed value or clicks along its track, and a map could provide pan and zoom buttons.
- Add a simple alternative wherever dragging is the only route. Dragging can stay as a convenience.
- When the page checks out, or dragging is essential to the activity (such as a drawing tool), the finding.
How Silktide tests this
- Raise one review prompt per page. Dragging behaviour is implemented in in ways no automated test can reliably detect, so Silktide prompts you to review every page rather than guessing.
- The prompt does not mean dragging was found - most pages have none, and for those the review takes moments.
Troubleshooting
Why does this appear on every page?
Because dragging cannot be detected automatically, the check errs on the side of asking. Approving a page records that you have reviewed it.
