Missing CSS files

Silktide finds stylesheets that your pages ask for but that fail to load, usually because the file was moved or deleted, or its web address was mistyped. A page missing a stylesheet can render as unstyled or broken-looking content.

<!-- This stylesheet no longer exists, so the page loses its styling -->
<link rel="stylesheet" href="\/css\/old-theme.css">

Why this matters

controls how your pages look. When a stylesheet fails to load, everything it styled falls back to plain browser defaults: layouts collapse, brand colours and fonts disappear, and carefully designed pages look broken. Visitors judge trustworthiness by appearance within seconds, so a visibly broken page costs you credibility immediately.

Even when the missing file was unused, every visitor's browser still wastes time requesting it and waiting for the failure, slowing the page down for nothing.

How to fix it

  1. Find the reference to the missing file - Silktide highlights where each one is used.
  2. If the file moved, update the reference to its new address. If it was deleted deliberately, remove the reference.
  3. If the file should exist, restore it or check why the server rejects the request.
  4. Test the page afterward: the styling should be back and the browser console free of failed requests.

How Silktide tests this

  1. Load each page in a real browser and record every file the page requests.
  2. Keep the requests for stylesheets.
  3. Report each one that fails to download - an error response from the server, such as 404, or a connection failure. Momentary timeouts and requests the browser itself abandoned are not reported, to avoid false alarms.
  4. Highlight where on the page each missing file is referenced.

Troubleshooting

The file loads when I try it

The file may be behind a login, blocked for automated visitors, or served inconsistently. Also check for mixed content: a stylesheet requested over plain HTTP from a page served over is blocked by the browser even though the file exists. If it is genuinely fine, the finding.

The page looks fine despite the missing file

The stylesheet may be redundant - old references often outlive the styles they loaded. The fix is still worthwhile: remove the reference and every visitor stops paying for a failed request.
