Preferences screen

Preferences shows how visitors have set their devices: light or dark appearance, touch versus mouse, and accessibility settings such as reduced motion and contrast. The numbers come from what the browser reports on each page view, counted in aggregate.

Use it when you need to design for the people who actually arrive, not for an assumed desktop with default settings. A high share of dark mode or reduced motion is a reason to test those states, not a curiosity.

What it shows

All seven preferences sit on one card. There is no table: each preference is a closed set of two or three values, so the legend under the chart already is the list.

  • Colour scheme - light or dark, plus a trend of those two over the date range. Dark-mode share moves with the time of day. The scheme is the one the visitor's device resolved, not one they chose on this website.
  • How people point - primary pointing device (touch, or a mouse or trackpad) next to whether a touchscreen is available at all. The second chart also counts laptops that have a trackpad and a screen you can touch.
  • Motion, contrast, forced colours, and transparency - visitors who have asked the system to reduce animation, change contrast, override your palette (for example Windows high contrast), or reduce transparency.

Each slice shows visitors, page views, and views per visitor. Percentages are among visits that could report that setting. If coverage is low, the screen says so, because the mix then describes only part of your traffic.

Click a setting to filter every Analytics screen to it: Pages, Acquisition, and the rest then count only visits with that preference. Click it again to clear. Export CSV on the card downloads all seven breakdowns.

Nothing here identifies a person. Preferences are counted as shares of visits, not stored as a profile.

  • Audience - location, browsers, and other technology reports
  • Accessibility - the same accessibility settings, shown against your site's checks
  • Speed screen - how the site felt to those visitors
