Tasks with a keyboard or screen reader

This page explains how to use the task list, the board, and a task's own screen with a keyboard or a . For features that work on every screen, such as shortcuts, themes, and zoom, see Accessibility features.

Choose a list or a board

Tasks view switches between List and Board. The list is the easier view with a screen reader, at high zoom, and on a small screen. In the list, you can select several tasks and change them all at once.

Move tasks on the board without dragging

You never need to drag a card:

  • To move a task to another column, press Tab to reach the card's status, press Enter to open the list of statuses, and choose one.
  • To move a task up or down within its column, move to the card's title, then hold ⌘ on Mac or Ctrl on Windows or Linux and press the Up or Down arrow key.

After every move, your screen reader announces where the task went, such as "Moved Fix alt text to In progress". Each column is a region named after its status, with the number of tasks in it.

Work on a task

  • Press J for the next task and K for the previous one.
  • The title is a text field named Task title, and the details beside it are in a region named Task properties.
  • In the description, standard formatting shortcuts work, such as ⌘B or Ctrl+B for bold.
  • Icons that stand for a value have text names, such as "Effort 2 of 5".
  • Silktide asks you to confirm before it deletes a task.
Known issues we are working on

We fix accessibility issues as part of our regular releases. These are the open ones you are most likely to notice, with a way around them where there is one.

  • Choosing a value. In the lists for status, priority, effort, and assignee, use Tab to move between the choices; the arrow keys do not.
  • Property names. Beside a task, a screen reader reads each property by its current value, such as "High", without its name.
  • The description editor has no name for a screen reader.
  • Scrolling the board. You cannot scroll the board sideways with the keyboard except by moving through the cards. Use the list instead.

If one of these gets in your way, tell us.
