Social title
When a page is shared on social networks or in messaging apps, the preview shows a headline called the social title. Silktide checks that each page provides one and that it describes the same page, rather than another page or leftover text from a copied template.
The social title is set with an tag in the page's :
<!-- Social title describing this page -->
<meta property="og:title" content="Annual membership fees" />
Why this matters
People decide whether to open a shared link based on the preview. If the title is missing, platforms fall back to whatever they can find, which often looks broken or generic. If the title describes a different topic than the page, visitors feel misled and may not click, or may leave immediately when the page does not match.
Mismatched social titles are usually accidents: a page was copied from a template, or the content changed but the sharing fields were never updated.
How to fix it
- In your , look for the page's social title, social sharing title, or preview title field. Many CMSs and SEO plugins manage this for you.
- Add a title if it is missing, or update it so it describes the page's actual topic. It does not need to be identical to the page title, just clearly about the same thing.
- If your CMS fills the social title automatically from the page title, check that the page title itself is accurate - see Missing page titles.
How Silktide tests this
- Test each page that could be shared - pages search engines and platforms are allowed to index.
- Read the page's
og:titletag. If no social title is specified, the page is reported. - If a social title is specified, compare it with the page's title and its main heading, ignoring case and punctuation. The titles are considered related when one contains the other or they share enough significant words.
- Pages whose social title appears unrelated to both are reported.
Troubleshooting
My social title is intentionally different
That is fine - the social title only needs to be recognizably about the same topic, not word-for-word identical. A punchier social version of the same headline passes. If Silktide reports a title you have deliberately chosen and you are confident it represents the page, the finding.
