Social description
When a page is shared on social networks or in messaging apps, the preview usually shows a sentence or two of description under the headline. Silktide checks that each page provides this description and that it summarizes the page it belongs to.
The social description is set with an tag in the page's :
<!-- Social description summarizing this page -->
<meta property="og:description" content="How membership fees are calculated, and when they are due." />
Why this matters
People use the preview description to decide whether a shared link is relevant to them. A missing description leaves platforms to improvise, often by grabbing arbitrary text from the page. A description copied from a different page, or left over from an old campaign, makes the link look unreliable and costs you clicks.
How to fix it
- In your , look for the page's social description, sharing description, or excerpt field. Many CMSs and SEO plugins manage this for you.
- Write a short, plain-language summary of what the page offers. Avoid vague text such as "Home" or "Read more", and avoid reusing a description from another page.
- Many CMSs reuse the as the social description. That works well, provided the meta description is accurate for this page - see Missing meta descriptions.
How Silktide tests this
- Test each page that could be shared - pages search engines and platforms are allowed to index.
- Read the page's
og:descriptiontag. - If no social description is specified, report the page - unless it has fewer than 50 words of body text, in which case it is skipped as too small to need one.
- If a description is specified, compare it with the page's meta description and opening body text, ignoring case and punctuation. It is considered related when one contains the other or they share enough significant words. Pages whose description appears unrelated to both are reported.
Troubleshooting
My description is a summary, not a quote from the page
That is expected - a description does not need to repeat the page's text word-for-word, only to share enough of its vocabulary to be recognizably about the same topic. Well-written summaries pass. If Silktide reports a description you are confident in, the finding.
