Analytics with a keyboard or screen reader

This page explains how to use Analytics' charts, maps, and tables with a keyboard or a . For features that work on every screen, such as shortcuts, themes, zoom, and how to read a chart, see Accessibility features.

Charts

Every chart opens as a table of its values with Expand. Beyond that:

  • The Metric tabs above a chart choose what it shows, such as visitors or page views. Move between them with the arrow keys.
  • The previous period is drawn as a dashed line, so you can tell it apart without relying on color. Changes are read as words, such as "Up 12% on the previous period".
  • Bars that split a total into parts, such as visitors by device, are read as a list of each part with its count and share.
  • A funnel writes each step's figures as text beside its bars, and Step by step lists them in a table.

The world map and globe

Locations and Realtime show visitors on a world map.

  • Press Tab to move through the countries and regions that have visitors. Each is read with its name and number of visitors.
  • Press Enter or Space to choose a country.
  • The map shows figures that are also on screen as text: the list and table on Locations, and Top countries on Realtime.

Journeys, tables, and filters

  • Journeys are written out as text, not played back as a recording. Each page is a card with its own heading, followed by the visit's events in order.
  • Tables sort from their column headings, and turn into lists when the window is narrow. Export CSV saves a table's rows.
  • Date range offers preset periods as buttons. Custom opens a calendar, where the arrow keys move between days.
  • Filters suggest values as you type. Use the arrow keys to move through them and Enter to choose one. Each filter has its own Remove button.
Known issues we are working on

We fix accessibility issues as part of our regular releases. These are the open ones you are most likely to notice, with a way around them where there is one.

  • Chart details. The details that appear when you point at a chart need a mouse or trackpad. Use Expand for the chart's table.
  • Lines told apart by color. When a chart has several lines, they are told apart by color. The legend and the table name each one.
  • Moving maps. The Globe turns by itself and stops while you point at it, focus a place, or zoom. Wireframe, the default, does not move. The Earth and Globe maps follow your device's reduce motion setting.
  • Realtime updates. Realtime refreshes every few seconds and cannot be paused. Screen readers are not told when its figures change.
  • Errors. When a chart or table cannot load, the message on screen is not announced.

If one of these gets in your way, tell us.
