Unavoidable animation
Silktide asks you to confirm that visitors can pause, stop, or hide anything on your pages that moves, blinks, scrolls, or updates by itself. This applies to content that moves for more than five seconds, or that updates automatically alongside other content.
Typical examples are image carousels, auto-playing video backgrounds, news tickers, scrolling marquees, and animated banners.
Why this matters
Moving content is a powerful attention magnet - which is exactly the problem. People with attention deficit disorders can find it impossible to read the rest of the page while something animates nearby, and people who read slowly, or use a , may not finish a carousel slide before it advances. Without a pause control, parts of your content are effectively unreadable for these visitors.
How to fix it
This check asks you to verify your pages manually. For each page with moving or auto-updating content, confirm that:
- Anything that moves, blinks, or scrolls for more than five seconds has a visible control to pause, stop, or hide it.
- Anything that updates automatically (such as a live feed) can be paused, stopped, hidden, or have its update frequency controlled.
- The controls work with a keyboard alone.
Where you find content without such a control, either add one (most carousel and video components support a pause button) or remove the automatic motion, for example by only advancing a carousel when the visitor clicks.
Animation is exempt only when it is essential - when removing it would fundamentally change the information or functionality, and no alternative without animation exists. A loading spinner is a common essential example.
How Silktide tests this
- Silktide cannot reliably judge whether every animation has a working pause control, because the behavior depends on interaction and timing.
- Instead, this check raises one review prompt per page, asking you to verify the behavior yourself.
- Once you have verified a page, record your to mark it as checked.
