Frame titles

Silktide lists the titles of the frames embedded in your pages so you can confirm each title describes what its frame contains. A frame's title is what people hear when navigating between frames, so a vague or misleading one leaves them guessing.

Note this is the title attribute on the frame element itself, not a <title> tag inside the framed page:

<!-- The title attribute names the frame for assistive technology -->
<iframe title="Customer support chat" src="chat.html"></iframe>

Why this matters

Frames often hold self-contained features like videos, maps, payment forms, and chat widgets. A user moving through a page hears each frame's title and uses it to decide whether to enter the frame. A title like "widget" or "frame1" gives them nothing to go on, so they must enter and explore the frame just to find out what it is.

How to fix it

This check asks you to confirm titles rather than reporting confirmed problems, because only a person can judge whether a title matches the frame's content.

  1. Review each reported title against what the frame actually shows on the page.
  2. Rewrite titles that are vague, generic, or wrong so they briefly describe the frame's content, such as "Advertisement" or "Map of our office locations".
  3. titles that already describe their frame well, so they are not raised again.

Frames with no title at all are reported separately by Frame title.

How Silktide tests this

  1. Find every <iframe> and <frame> element on the page, skipping any elements you have excluded from checking.
  2. Collect each frame that has a non-empty title attribute.
  3. Present the titles for you to review and approve or fix - Silktide cannot judge automatically whether a title matches the frame's content.
