Open Graph

Open Graph is a set of tags added to a page's HTML that describe how the page should be presented when it is shared - typically a title, description, image, and link. Social networks and messaging apps such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and Teams read these tags to build the preview card people see.

<meta property="og:title" content="How to store wine">
<meta property="og:description" content="A guide to cellaring wine at home.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/wine-cellar.jpg">

Without Open Graph tags, a sharing platform typically falls back to guessing from the page's and the first image it finds - a much less reliable result, since that guess can pick an unrelated image or a description meant for search engines rather than a social preview.
